Clinical Pastoral Education Program

As part of its commitment to the mission of healing and learning, CHW supports the program of Clinical Pastoral Education in accordance with the Standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. The Clinical Pastoral Education program promotes the development and delivery of excellent spiritual care to patients, family members and staff through education and training of our students in ministry skills and in intra-personal and inter-personal awareness.

Saint Francis Memorial Hospital creates a collaborative, interfaith and clinical learning environment in which CPE students develop their skills in pastoral reflection, pastoral formation, pastoral competence and pastoral specialization.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is interfaith professional education for ministry. It brings participants into supervised encounters with people in crisis. Through intense involvement with people in need of spiritual care, and the feedback you receive from peers and teachers, you develop new awareness as yourself as a person, your abilities as a caregiver, and the needs of those who you serve.

Clinical Pastoral Education program is targeted to individuals preparing to become professional hospital chaplains, seminary students, laypeople and others in graduate programs and denominations who are taking CPE to fulfill requirements. Students may participate either as interns (for one unit) or residents (for four consecutive units). Our CPE program strives to maintain a diverse faculty and student population representing women and men of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds and faith traditions. The CPE Center is committed to providing equal opportunity in the admissions process, without discrimination based on age, gender, race, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, sexual orientation or veteran's status.
