Sports Medicine Services

Diagnostic Services

The Centers for Sports Medicine are based on the concept of convenient and patient-focused medical care. All of our patients have access to a multidisciplinary team of primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists and physical therapists. These experts assess and treat activity-related injuries incurred by both professional athletes and physically active individuals.

Because the Centers for Sports Medicine are hospital affiliated, patients have quick access to a broad range of diagnostic services, including:

  • Laboratory testing
  • Radiology Services, including X-ray, CT scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Nuclear medicine (isotope scanning)

Orthopedic & Arthroscopic Surgery

For injuries requiring surgery, we offer the latest surgical procedures, performed by board-certified orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists. Most surgical interventions are performed as outpatient procedures.

Our surgeons at the Centers for Sports Medicine:

  • Are pioneers in arthroscopic laser surgery
  • Are among only a few in the Bay Area who perform an innovative cartilage transplant procedure in which healthy cells are removed from the patient's injured joint, cultured in a laboratory and re-inserted into the defect.
  • Perform reconstructive surgery of major joints such as the shoulder, knee, ankle and foot.
  • Perform arthroscopies on major joints, joint replacements, bunionectomies and neuroma incisions.

Podiatry Services

Our board-certified podiatrists:

  • Evaluate foot and ankle problems in patients of all ages and provide surgical and non-surgical treatments.
  • Analyze gait and sport techniques to diagnose the cause of an injury and correct abnormal patterns that contribute to injuries.
  • Provide patients with custom orthotic devices and lifts.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Injections of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP):

  • Injecting platelet rich plasma obtained from a patient's own blood is an emerging treatment in sports medicine.
  • The use of biologics such as PRP for treating persistent tendon problems like tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and patellar tendinosis may help stimulate the healing process.

Physical Therapy

Aggressive specialized treatments provided by experienced therapists emphasize returning the patient rapidly and safely to their previous activities.

Injuries are treated with a variety of activities and approaches and may include:

  • evidence-based functional exercises
  • return to run programs
  • biomechanical evaluation
  • electric stimulation iontophoresis (administration of medication by means of an electric current instead of injection)
  • cryotherapy (ice treatments)
  • hands-on-soft-tissue and/or joint mobilization
  • Pilates-based rehabilitation
